The latest National Statistics produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26th February 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on births and infant mortality include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2011. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 28th February 2012.

In 2011:

  • there were 35,598 live births to Welsh residents in 2011
  • fertility rates rose generally during the 2000s but fell back in 2011, with the average number of children per woman, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR), standing at 1.90
  • 58 per cent of live births in 2011 were outside marriage, although most of these were jointly registered by both parents
  • although the rates fluctuate from year to year, generally during the 2000s infant mortality rates have fallen; in 2011 the infant mortality rate stood at 3.9 per thousand live births, the lowest ever recorded rate for a single year for Wales
  • the stillbirth rate has fluctuated during the 2000s between 4.6 and 5.4 per 1,000 total births
