The latest statistics on the Youth Service in Wales, produced by the Welsh Assembly Government, were released on 13th April 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

These statistics present information collected about young people aged 11-25 years who are members of the Youth Service, the accreditations they have gained, the projects in which they are participating and information about the workforce and finances of the Service for Wales for the period April 2009- March 2010. The latest bulletin presents more detailed information in addition to the headline statistics previously released on 25th November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Around 100,000 young people were members of the Youth Service, representing 18 per cent of the 11-25 year old population.
  • Local authorities reported 1,400 projects running across Wales, 60 per cent of which were delivered solely by the Youth Service.
  • There were just over 1,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff employed by the Youth Service, a 15 per cent increase compared to 2008-09.
  • The total income for the Youth Service decreased by 4 per cent between 2008-09 and 2009-10, from £44.1 million to £42.9 million.
  • The total spend by the Youth Service in Wales was £41.6 million, a 6 per cent decrease from £44.1 million in 2008-09.
