The latest statistics on Operational issues affecting the Fire and Rescue Service produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Operational issues affecting the Fire and Rescue Service include data for Wales for the financial year 2009-10. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15 October 2009.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel

  • There were 2,337 fulltime equivalent staff and 1,598 retained duty system staff employed across the three Welsh Fire and Rescue Service Authority areas on 31 March 2010 compared to 2,332 fulltime and 1,578 retained staff on 31 March 2009.
  • There were 1,614 job applications received for retained duty system and non operational posts in Wales in 2009-10.

Equality and diversity

  • At 31 March 2010, males accounted for 86 per cent of all staff, and for 96 per cent of wholetime and 97 per cent of retained duty system staff.
  • Minority ethnic staff in Wales accounted for 0.7 per cent of all staff, a similar proportion as the previous year.
  • During 2009-10 women accounted for 19 per cent of all successful applications whilst people from ethnic minority backgrounds accounted for 1.5 per cent.

Health and safety

  • During 2009-10, 6.7 shifts/days were lost per person to sickness for wholetime firefighters and 13.6 shifts/days for fire control staff.
  • The total number of injuries sustained by wholetime and retained duty system firefighters increased by 22 per cent to 234 in 2009-10.

Operational activities

  • During 2009-10 there were 10,234 non-fire incidents in Wales, a decrease of 6 per cent on the previous year.
  • The number of front-line appliances increased by 16 to 371 at 31 March 2010 compared with the previous year, whilst reserve appliances increased by 4 to 60.
