Welsh Transport Statistics 2009 – Chapter 1: Road Lengths and Conditions

The latest National Statistics on Road lengths and conditions produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Road lengths include data up to 1 April 2009, and statistics on road conditions include data for Wales for the period up to the end of December 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total road length in Wales in 2009 was 34,164 km.
  • Unclassified minor surfaced roads contribute approximately half the total road length in Wales.
  • Powys covers by far the largest land area of the Welsh unitary authorities. It accounts for the highest proportion of all A Trunk roads (27 per cent), B and C roads (21 per cent) and minor surfaced roads (12 per cent), resulting in an overall 16 per cent of the total road length of Wales.
  • The greatest length of motorway is in Newport, which accounts for 19 per cent of the total motorway in Wales.
  • One-third (33 per cent) of the road length of Wales is classed as being in built-up areas.
  • In 2008, the greatest length of dual carriageway was in Flintshire, which accounts for 11 per cent of the total dual carriageway in Wales.
  • In 2009, 4.3 per cent of the motorway network and 5.8 per cent of the trunk road network required close monitoring of structural condition compared with 4.6 per cent and 6.2 per cent respectively in 2008.
  • During 2008-09 Rhondda Cynon Taf had the highest proportion of Principal (A) roads in need of further investigation, 11 per cent.
  • During 2008-09 Blaenau Gwent had the highest proportion of B and C roads in need of further investigation, 14 per cent.
