Welsh Transport Statistics 2009 – Chapter 4: Road Safety

The latest National Statistics on road safety produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 7,783 personal injury road accidents reported in Wales in 2008. The number of casualties reported was 11,185, which was 1,084 (9 per cent) fewer than in 2007.
  • In 2008, the number of people killed or seriously injured (1,395) was 31 per cent     lower than the average for 1994-98.
  • The number of children killed or seriously injured in 2008 (115) was 60 per cent lower than the 1994-98 average.
  • In 2008 the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres was 37 per cent lower than the 1994-98 average.
  • In 2008, 72 per cent of casualties were car, taxi or minibus users, 11 per cent were pedestrians, 6 per cent were motorcyclists, and 4 per cent were pedal cyclists. The remaining road user types accounted for 6 per cent of casualties.
  • In 2008 there were 870 accidents involving goods vehicles. Of these, 16 per cent were either fatal or serious accidents.
  • During 2008, over one-third (37 per cent) of all road users killed were aged 16 to 25.
