Co-ordinated Release of Population and Migration Outputs, November 2011

The Office for National Statistics, the Home Office, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the National Records of Scotland (NRS) have today simultaneously published a range of demographic data. This forms part of a series of co-ordinated releases of population and migration data, and is part of a ‘coherent reporting’ programme for demographic statistics.

UK Statistics Authority Website Key Results

International Migration (see notes):

  • The number of people from outside the UK entering Wales for 12 months or more was approximately 15,000 in 2010, compared to 14,000 in 2009 and 16,000 in 2008.
  • The number of people leaving Wales for 12 months or more was approximately 11,000 in 2010, lower than the estimates of 13,000 in 2009 and 16,000 in 2008 but higher than the estimates for 2006 and 2007 (10,000 and 7,000 respectively).
  • There was a net inflow of around 4,000 international migrants to Wales in 2010, which was higher than the net inflow in 2009 and 2008 (net inflow of around 1,000 each year) but lower than the net estimates for 2006 and 2007 (net inflow of around 6,000 and 8,000).

Internal UK migration:

  • The number of people moving into Wales from the rest of the UK in the twelve months ending March 2010 was around 50,300. The number of people moving from Wales to the rest of the UK was around 47,900. This gives a net inward migration of around 2,400 for the period March 2009 to March 2010.  This is higher than the net inward migration figure of 1,600 for the previous 12 months and the net inward migration figure of 2,300 for the 12 months ending December 2010.

Information and data published jointly today include:

  • Migration Statistics Quarterly Report, November 2010. This summarises the different quarterly datasets and provides key message from the latest data.

Notes

1. Long Term International Migration is the only estimate of long-term civilian migration covering both flows to and from the UK.
2. A long-term international migrant is defined as someone who changes his or her country of usual residence for a period of at least 12 months (UN definition). These figures do not include estimates of short-term migrants (those moving country for less than 12 months).
3. Long Term International Migration estimates are primarily based on the International Passenger Survey.  The sample size for Wales is very small, and therefore the estimates (particularly outward international migration) are very volatile.  We are continuing to work with ONS on improving population and migration statistics.
4. Figures may not sum due to rounding.
5. ONS in partnership with other organisations have a long-term programme of work on improving migration and population statistics, and as a result international migration figures from 2002-2008 were revised in May 2010.
